General Mental Health

Mental health is the feeling that we have enough resources (within ourselves and in our world) that we can manage whatever stressors come our way. Being mentally well means that we can cope effectively with the usual challenges life throws our way. Our mental health can be compromised in a few different ways.

First, we may not have enough internal resources to overcome those daily challenges. Because mental health is not yet taught in most schools, many of us never learn the skills we need to manage our lives. Therapy can help you, or your loved ones, develop those skills as you might develop skills when learning a new sport.

Second, we may not have enough resources outside of ourselves to take care of ourselves during difficult times. We may be great at deep breathing and riding out emotional waves, but circumstances in our lives (a recent move or job loss, for example) might make it hard for us to get the support we need. A therapist can not only serve as a member of the support team you need but can also help you navigate toward finding more connection and greater support in your world outside of therapy.

Finally, sometimes things happen in life that overpower even the most resilient and well-equipped of us all. Traumas, losses, and things like global pandemics, may be so massive in their stressfulness that we can use all of our skills and resources and still not feel mentally well. In these cases, therapy can be a space to help build up even more coping strategies while breaking down the trauma or stressor into bite sized chunks so that it becomes more manageable.

All of our therapies are designed around your specific needs. So whether you’re generally pretty well and just struggling through something particularly hard or you feel as if you never really figured out how to cope with life, or anything in between, your therapist will meet you where you are and together you’ll come up with a plan that gets you to where you want to be.

Therapy vs. Assessment

Sometimes, we come to our path knowing what we need and with some vague idea of how to get ourselves to where we’d like to be. In these cases, therapy is a great option. Together, with your therapist, you can work on a plan that will lead you there. Other times, our path is unclear or we’ve tried walking it so many times, unsuccessfully, that we feel uncertain, lost, or overwhelmed. In cases such as these, an assessment might be an important step on your journey. At Sweetgrass, we provide Therapeutic Assesments that can help you (and your therapist) get really clear on what is keeping you stuck, what is getting in the way, or what you need to become your brightest self. If you already have a good sense of what those things are, therapy is probably the right place to start. If you aren’t sure, or have been at it for awhile without much success, perhaps an assessment is worth trying. Therapeutic Assessments are a 4-6 week deep dive that includes testing as well as therapeutic engagement with your assessor. The cost varies between $2000-$5000 depending on the questions you have about yourself and the process we must take to answer them.

Addiction

At Sweetgrass, we treat folks with addictive issues from a holistic standpoint. We believe people have addictions, people are not their addictions. If you, or someone you love, struggles with addictive behaviors (drugs and alcohol, technology, gambling, etc.), we can help you. Addictions can be devastating. Addictive behaviors can impact, or even replace, one’s connections. Sweetgrass Psychological Services offers Substance Use Dependency evaluations, ACT / DUI classes, Chemical Dependency treatment and addictions counseling. We also provide services with individuals with co-occurring mental illness and addiction-related issues.

ACT/DUI class through Sweetgrass Psychological Services consist of the Prime for Life curriculum, assessment and possible treatment. With our drive and commitment to provide services to all individuals we have looked at ways to decrease monetary expense. The class costs $300 and the assessment costs $100 (for which we accept many major insurance plans). It is our hope to alleviate some of the stress and hurdles clients may experience while obtaining necessary pieces to their obligations.

All addiction services are provided by Teddi Johannsen, SWLC, LAC or Colleen Davis-Timms, LCPC, LAC.

Group Therapy

Many people come to therapy seeking help with relationships or striving to have greater connection and intimacy. While individual therapy can be a helpful space to dig into these issues, group therapy can be a space to put our new ways of being into practice. At Sweetgrass, we offer process group therapy for people interested in exploring their interpersonal dynamics as well specific groups on topics such as emotional growth, grief, anxiety and more. If you are interested in joining a group with us, reach out and let us know.

Mental Fitness Training

We know about physical fitness and the things we can do to improve it. But what about your mental health? When someone starts to feel as if their mental health is suffering, they start to wonder if maybe they should go talk to someone. But, one-on-one therapy isn’t for everyone. For others, it’s not enough. In the spirit of ensuring that everyone who wants to can achieve mental wellness, we offer programs and events that provide folks with the opportunity to improve their mental fitness without (or in addition to) sitting in a room with a therapist and talking about their feelings. While we offer programs to the public throughout the year, we also offer individualized plans. So if this sounds like something you might be into, get in touch.
